Son of Shadow by Jon Lenahan spotlight post

Hello!  Welcome to the latest post here on the Swordsmith blog, westu hal to you.  It comes as another delight to be working with The Write Reads gang once again, which is always fantastic! Now I have something a bit different on show here today, I am providing a spotlight on the interesting premise that is Son of Shadow by Jon Lenahan.

Before I go any further here we of course have the premise.

The Premise

A world of faeries, leprechauns and dragons – and magic fuelled by the blood of trees.

A mystery portal to the Real World.

And a pair of curious young adventurers who know they shouldn’t step through it…

Meet Fergal the Second, nicknamed ‘two’. Or ‘Doe’, in his own language. He can do magic. But, for the moment, he’s forgotten where he’s from. Or what’s happened to his blind friend Ruby.

He’s actually from Tir na Nog, the enchanted world of Shadowmagic, where a new generation of the royal House of Duir are cheeking their parents, preparing for adulthood and itching to see the Real World for themselves – whatever the peril.

The Spotlight

I was really intrigued by this book, the connection with a Fae realm is an almost immediate yes from me.  From what I read of the book, Jon had a nice easy, accessible writing style and the characters were intriguing and I am curious to understand more of the mystery around Fergal.  The most intriguing and wondrous part for me was the introduction fueled by the blood of trees…wow!  I honestly believe it will have everything I look for in fantasy, which is effective world building (which there was), effective main characters and well drawn characters (they were emerging) and an intriguing magic system (the blood of trees!) and the book ticks all the boxes for me and a full review will be on the blog soon.

About Jon

Born in Philadelphia but long settled in the UK, John Lenahan is an acclaimed magician and TV performer. He fronted his own BBC2 magic series Stuff the White Rabbit, played the voice of the toaster in Red Dwarf and has appeared on a wide range of entertainment shows including TFI Friday, Comedy Café and Celebrity Squares. He is a member of the exclusive Magic Circle. He is also the author of the popular Shadowmagic trilogy, a fantasy adventure series for young adults which combines Irish folk myth with 21st-century wit. Son of Shadow takes up the story once more, following the noble houses of the magical parallel world of Tir na Nog into the next generation.

That’s all from me on this one, thanks as always to The Write Reads, thank you for checking the blog out and for checking the spotlight out as well.  I really do hope you are staying safe, reading something awesome and finally westu hal.
